The Dark Knight Returns Post 1

Question: Why does Bruce come out of retirement? What are his motivations? Are they only to help the city? Or could he have more selfish reasons?

There are many possibilities why Bruce Wayne decided to come out of retirement. I believe that Bruce came out of retirement when he realized that the peace of he created as batman in the previous years was gone. There is some evidence that shows this. One example that shows this is when he is walking home from the drink with James Gordon.

This show how only after ten years of batman going into retirement, crime has returned to being just as bad as when his parents were murdered. There even is a part where he is standing at the area where is parents were murdered, and to thugs try to mug him. In this scene it shows how he balls his hands into fists, which shows how the crime is getting to him. It also shows how the thugs are talking about murdering him, and this is when he clenches his fists, and challenges them by saying “come on”. Another crucial moment is when Bruce is flipping through the T.V Channels, and he hears about, murders, kidnaps, etc.

It shows him trying to flip past them to avoid thinking about it, but instead it only makes it more difficult for him. I believe that Bruce realizes that batman only created a temporary peace, so he comes out of retirement to; once again to clean up the city, and (probably) to find a more permanent solution to crime in Gotham. That is what I believe is why Bruce came out of retirement, and what his motivations where for coming out of retirement.
